Arco
Downtown Rio is made of layers: what the city built, what it abandoned, and an art scene that has been springing up on top of it all. The Arco opens inside that scene, on the mezzanine of number 34 at Praça XV, in the historic Arco do Teles building.
What it is
The Arco is a transdisciplinary studio. Painting, audiovisual and design share the same house and never work in isolation: they cross into each other, question each other and come out of the encounter changed. It is studio, school and philosophy at once, a collective space for making and learning that connects people and places through the search for knowledge, with horizontal education and a healthy flow of information between those already inside and those just arriving.
The conditions that allowed life to appear are the same ones that allow art: simple elements that, combined, create friction and form new structures. The combinations? Infinite and metamorphic. Natures that look nothing alike meet here, and the result is sometimes ordinary, sometimes extraordinary. It is the door left open to unpredictability that lets creation in.

The fronts of the house
Whoever creates here inevitably meets and influences someone else.
- Studio. This is where the creative process happens, every day.
- Gallery. The Arco’s exhibitions take place at the front door of the house. Here the space shows what is made in the house and the work of emerging artists, underlining its multidisciplinary nature.
- Talks. The Arco does not happen without communication. Curiosity comes first.
- Classes and workshops. Experiences and classes led by the inhabitants and their guests. Whoever teaches also learns.
- Products. Products take the Arco beyond art on the wall, into people’s daily lives and creative processes. Always made responsibly: the Arco believes in upcycling.
- Curva. The front that reaches outward, opening onto the street: spreading, democratizing and fostering culture. Whoever passes through the Curva does not only receive. They share, and are welcomed and provoked too.
Who lives here
Three artists share the house, plus an intern. What is taken from one language becomes raw material for another.
Qualified for almost any task.
The Arco’s concept and visual identity are by Ívanno José, of Só Letra Braba, who has walked alongside the house since before it opened.

The contemporary is the now. It is not a class, it is the present. That is why the house is open and easy to reach.
